01The brief

A cultural centre with something on every week.

Kutubna Cultural Center in Nad Al Hamar runs a full programme: exhibitions, art sessions for children and adults, book talks, workshops, a café and spaces to rent. Beyond the exhibition identities, we became the studio behind its feed. Every month brought a calendar, a few campaigns and the exhibitions that opened in between.

One frame, many voices

A light paper ground, the Kutubna turquoise and the mark in the corner. Inside that frame, each series could take its own colour and mood.

People first

Wherever we could, the post leads with a person: the artist, the author, the child at the easel. The programme is about people, so the feed is too.

  1. 01

    Monthly calendars

A cover and a slide per event, every month.

  2. 02

Weekly classes inspired by Arab artists.

  3. 03

    Community days

One day, a dozen hosts, a dozen posts.

  4. 04

    Campaigns

    Space rental, holiday camps, workshops.

  5. 05

    Exhibitions

Shows that lived only on social.

02The monthly calendar

A month at a glance, then one event at a time.

Each month opened with a cover: a face from the programme, in black and white, under a single word, the name of the month. The slides that follow keep one layout: the date set large, the event and its host, the time, and a tall photograph on the right. People learned to swipe through it like a printed programme.

03Art sessions

Three summers of painting, three looks.

Kutubna’s Saturday art sessions teach children and adults through the work of Arab artists. Each month got its own series. July set the paintings on an easel inside the gallery. August, the Saturday Art Lab, gave each artist a white page and a bold name. September went turquoise, with the artist’s name running up the side.

04January Community Day

One Sunday, thirteen hosts.

For its first Community Day, Kutubna handed the building to its community: authors reading to children, painting and watercolour workshops, a teen talk, live music and local makers. The announcement brought every host together in one black and white group. Then each one got a post of their own, the same paper texture, turquoise headline and a cut-out portrait, so thirteen very different sessions read as one day.

05Campaigns

A room to rent, a camp to fill.

Some posts had to sell. For the space rental campaign we led with a question, “Looking for a space with a soul?”, over real photographs of the shelves and the armchair, in a single panel of Kutubna blue. For the Spring Break Arabic Language Camp we let the children do the talking: photographs of play and learning, with dates and ages set in both languages.

06Textile Choreography

A solo show that lived on the feed.

Textile Choreography was a solo show of fibre art by the Brazilian artist Cris Martins: twine, wood, jute and ramie, and the first showing of her Reimagining Al Sadu. With one artist, we put her in the frame, in white against a deep teal wash, beside the bilingual title. Three slides, the show, the artist and the collections, were set for square, portrait and story formats.

07The City in Its Details

Blur the panel, keep the city sharp.

Robert Powers photographs Dubai’s buildings up close, old and new. We tried the title on turquoise, on white and on a dark panel. In the final design the panel became a blurred strip of the photograph itself, so the type sits on the city rather than over it. For stories, the same band ran down three different photographs: a street, a façade, a mosque under a blue sky.

The result

A feed that works like the centre’s noticeboard. Each series has its own look, and every post still reads as Kutubna, from a children’s storytime to a solo show.
