01The brief

A photographer reads the city.

The City in Its Details: The Past and Future in Dubai’s Architecture is a photography exhibition by Robert Powers. His pictures look closely at Dubai’s buildings, old and new: balconies, façades, a mosque against a deep blue sky. The brief asked for a clear invitation to the opening, free entry and open to all.

The work

Architectural photography of Dubai, from older residential streets to new landmarks.

The system

It follows the Kutubna exhibition system: the work fills the frame, a bilingual title block leads, and dates and opening details run in matching English and Arabic.

02The key visual

Blur the panel, keep the city sharp.

We tried the title block on the Kutubna turquoise, on white and on a dark panel. In the final design, the panel became a blurred strip of the photograph itself, so the type sits on the city rather than over it, and the street stays sharp beside it.

03The stories

Three photographs, one frame.

For stories, the same blurred band ran down the centre of three different photographs: a residential street, a stepped façade, and a white mosque under a blue sky. The frame stays the same each time, so the photographs are what changes.

The result

An opening campaign for The City in Its Details, 4 April to 10 May 2026, on the Kutubna exhibition system. The photographs supplied the colour; the design only had to hold them.
